A guide to our local area…

First in our Local Guide is our neighbourhood store, Nisa, which you will find behind the property in Hyde Square. It sells most items to cater to your immediate needs.  There is also a kebab shop, a computer repair shop, a hairdresser, and a coffee cart.

There is a pharmacy on the High Street in the center of Upper Beeding. At the other end of the High Street (Just 0.2 miles from the house), there’s an Esso petrol station with a cash point, and a Subway, just beyond that is The Rising Sun pub.

A National Trail within the South Downs National Park is 160km (100 miles) long, and it runs right through Upper Beeding – So from here you can walk either all the way to Winchester or to Beachy head!

A short walk through the villages of Upper Beeding and Bramber, over the river Adur and you’ll find the ruin of Bramber Castle ~ It’s a really lovely place to picnic on a sunny day! The remains of this Norman castle have stunning views over the village, and the River Adur. It was founded by William de Braose soon after the Norman Conquest. It’s approximately 4.2 miles round trip.

An iron age fort atop one of our biggest hills with an absolutely stunning view. In the right conditions it feel like you took a day trip to heaven to look down on the world. It’s just incredible and well worth the walk up there! It’s higher than Devils Dyke but not accessible by car. You can walk up from the nearby carpark.

If you prefer a longer walk, it is reachable on foot from the house via the South Downs way. It is an approximately 8 Mile round trip.

The most famous and beloved of our local panoramic viewing points, on a good day you can see 66 miles from the top! Maintained by The National Trust

It is also home to a Vintage Inn pub, The Devils Dyke Hotel

Approximately 20 mins by car, though you can walk there via the South Downs way if you so desire, and you could certainly bike it if you don’t mind the climbs!

Our closest, and quaintest, coastal town. Spanning both sides of the river Adur – On one side is the town, with little antique and independent shops to explore. On the other side is the main beach, some houses, and some very interesting houseboats!

It’s about 10 minutes away by car, but if you like a good walk, you can walk or cycle all the way down the river path to the sea – It’s approximately 5.5 miles each way. It’s part of the South Downs link, a path that links Shoreham to Guildford.

A quirky and diverse bazaar in Shoreham town run by a collective of vintage and arts & crafts enthusiasts, there’s always something interesting to discover, there are a few small cafes near by, and The Crystal Cave is right outside. We can also heartily recommend Clubhouse Coffee Co!

Find it at 2 Tarmount Lane, Shoreham-by-Sea BN43 6DA.

You can walk, the river path that passes through our village and stretches all the way to the sea at Shoreham.

There is so much we could say about Brighton, the piers, the seafront walks, shopping in the Lanes, the Pavilion, the Dome, the independent businesses, the art scene, the quirky, the ethical, the glamourous and the bohemian, Brighton has is it all..

Hugely popular with the locals, you can find the Nomadic Sauna on Kingston beach, where you can swim in the safer waters of the harbour by the lighthouse. The RNLI station there is often open and welcomes visitors.  The wonderful Nomadic Sauna, a favourite with the local cold water swimmers!
Find it at: Brighton Rd, Shoreham-by-Sea BN43 6RN

Inner Bloom Yoga

Just outside the village, there’s a beautiful yoga studio facing the hills, offering a range of yoga, physio therapy and fitness classes.
Find it at: Inner bloom Fitness Golding Barn Raceway, Small Dole BN5 9XH

Professed to be a town but it’s closer to a large village, it is however one of the most picturesque in West Sussex.  Cobblestone Walk has a selection of stalls and shops run by independent artists and traders. There is also a farmers market once a month and a few lovely tea shops and cafes, and the local leisure center with swimming pool. Should you need it, there you will also find the medical center.

The Rising Sun, Upper Beeding – 0.3 miles away. Offers a good pub menu including Sunday Roasts, with some vegetarian and vegan options. Often hosts events, live music nights and beer festivals.01903 814424 https://www.risingsunupperbeeding.com/

The Shepherd and Dog, Fulking – A really nice Gastro pub set at the foot of the South Down Hills with a garden reaching up the hill, and a natural spring. Great for Sunday strolls and Sunday lunches – Booking is definitely advised! https://www.shepherdanddogpub.co.uk/

Chequers, Steyning – A small but historic local pub. Does serve food but the chefs are on a ‘guest’ basis, like a ‘pop-up’ kitchen. So the food there is a bit potluck. Best to call ahead and find out who is running the kitchen on the date you want to book. 01903 814437  https://www.chequerinn.co.uk/
